GLP-1 Drug Shortages in 2026: Your Options When Supply Is Limited

The Ongoing Supply Challenge

Despite expanded manufacturing, periodic shortages of GLP-1 medications continue in 2026 — particularly for specific doses of tirzepatide and semaglutide. If you're facing a supply gap, here are your options.

Immediate Options

Ask your pharmacy to check all locations

Different branches of the same pharmacy chain may have stock. Ask your pharmacist to check inventory at nearby locations.

Contact the manufacturer patient support

  • Novo Nordisk: 1-888-693-5367 (for semaglutide)
  • Eli Lilly: 1-800-545-6962 (for tirzepatide) They can sometimes locate stock or expedite shipments.

Request a different dose

If your specific dose is unavailable but lower doses are in stock, your provider can adjust your prescription. Two lower-dose pens can often substitute for one higher-dose pen (e.g., two 0.5mg clicks instead of one 1.0mg).

If You Face a Gap in Treatment

Short gap (1-2 weeks)

Minimal impact. Resume your normal dose when supply returns. You may notice slightly increased appetite, but it typically returns to suppressed levels within 2-3 days of restarting.

Longer gap (3-4 weeks)

Appetite will return more noticeably. Focus on protein-first eating and maintaining your exercise routine. When restarting, your provider may suggest starting one dose level below your previous dose to reduce GI side effects.

Extended gap (1+ months)

Discuss with your provider. You may need to re-titrate from a lower dose. Don't restart at your full dose after a long break — the side effects will be much more intense.

Switching Medications

If one GLP-1 is consistently unavailable:

  • Semaglutide → Tirzepatide (or vice versa): Requires new prescription but straightforward transition
  • Brand → Compounded: Available from licensed compounding pharmacies at lower cost
  • Injectable → Oral: Oral semaglutide (Rybelsus) is sometimes available when injectable is not

Maintaining Progress During Gaps

  • Double down on protein (80-100g daily minimum)
  • Continue or increase exercise
  • Log your weight daily to catch regain early
  • Practice mindful eating — the habits you built still work
  • Stay hydrated — thirst mimics hunger

Prevention

  • Request 90-day prescriptions when possible
  • Ask your provider for backup prescriptions (alternate doses or medications)
  • Fill early when your pharmacy has stock
  • Consider mail-order pharmacies with larger inventories
