Eating Out on GLP-1: A Practical Restaurant Guide

The Core Challenge

Restaurant portions are built for appetites you no longer have. On a GLP-1, eating a normal restaurant plate can leave you uncomfortably full, nauseated, or worse. A little planning makes dining out enjoyable again.

Ordering Strategies

  • Order an appetizer as your main. Starter portions are often perfectly sized.
  • Split an entrée with your dining companion, or box half before you start eating.
  • Lead with protein. Order the protein-forward dish; you'll feel satisfied on less and protect muscle.
  • Go easy on fat. Rich, greasy dishes sit heavily with slowed digestion. Grilled beats fried.

Pace Yourself

Eat slowly and pause partway through. Fullness signals arrive with a delay on these medications, and the discomfort of overshooting is real. It's much easier to stop at "satisfied" than to recover from "too full."

Alcohol

Many people find their alcohol tolerance drops on GLP-1s, and drinks add calories with little satiety. If you drink, go slow, hydrate alongside, and see how you feel — you may need far less than before.

Handling the Social Side

You don't owe anyone an explanation for eating less. A simple "I'm pacing myself" or boxing leftovers works fine. If a host is insistent, taking food to go is an easy peace-keeper.

If You Do Overeat

It happens. Sip water, take a gentle walk, and don't lie down right away (to avoid reflux). Note what triggered it — a specific food or portion — so you can adjust next time.

Logging how you felt after eating out a few times reveals your personal patterns fast: which cuisines sit well, what portion works, and where your limits are.
